What Who is fashion?
If you asked one hundred people to define the word ‘fashion’, I can almost guarantee that you would hear one hundred different answers; and in these answers, completely different opinions shining through.
My most favourite definition of fashion is a quote from Cynthia Durcanin- international fashion editor who worked at Elle in Paris. She said, “Fashion is a state of mind. A spirit, an extension of one's self. Fashion talks, it can be an understated whisper, a high-energy scream or an all knowing wink and a smile. Most of all fashion is about being comfortable with yourself, translating self-esteem into a personal style.” I don’t think anyone could match my opinion more.
A lot of people tell me ‘I don’t care about fashion’, ‘I don’t follow fashion’, ‘I hate fashion’, ‘I’m really not into fashion’; they claim to be completely detached from fashion as if it is a stupid and shallow society, but what they forget is that you cannot isolate yourself from fashion. Fashion is not a cult, it is about what you get up every day and put on your body. It can express mood, character, emotion, purpose. You may believe that you isolate yourself from ‘fashion’, but in fact you too go to a store, or browse through a website and selectively chose what you would like to put on your body. Whether you opt for comfort or glamour is irrelevant; you still make the choice on how to dress yourself, and this is how your fashion tells a story about who you are.
If you think about it, just for a moment, you will see how the smallest details of a person’s outfit can give away the most subtle clues of a person’s character or mood.
Let me make some examples…
Unmatching socks: I was sitting on the metro and see a girl opposite me wearing sneakers, over the top of her shoes I could see she had on one white sock, and one black. How does this translate? It could tell me, I was in a hurry today and I’m not intending to show of my feet, or it could tell me I’m disorganised, but I’m free and easy-going.
Someone else’s t-shirt: My friend was dressing for bed and put on an oversized old grey t-shirt, she told me it actually belongs to her boyfriend. Translation? She likes to feel loved. It reminds her of the man that makes her feel special. Accentuate
‘Glammed up’: someone is dressed to flatter their features and catch your eye; they look glamorous and stylish. This can translate in several ways; perhaps they like to follow trend, or perhaps they are confident and like to stand out. Or maybe it means the opposite, they try to disguise their lack of self-confidence by dressing to stand out, and to make themselves feel better about themselves.
There are different styles and categories in fashion too, which can say so much about a person. For example someone may dress to match their genre of music, which could be a passion of theirs, and this of course, will tell you a lot about a person.
Fashion fascinates me; it is an exciting blend of self-expression, emotion and culture. I do think it is important; Fashion is a language which tells a story about the person who wears it. "Clothes create a wordlessmeans of communication that we all understand," said Katherine Hamnett, a top British fashion designer.
If you ask me ‘What is fashion?’ I will tell you, that fashion is what you are.
